About the Program

The Cumberland River is one of Nashville’s greatest resources and a special ingredient in the quality of life in Music City. The Cumberland is an abundant source of drinking water, a destination for recreation, leisure and entertainment, and a magnet for economic investment.

Much of our sewer system is old and lacks the capacity to handle the current volume of sewage and stormwater. The Clean Water Nashville Overflow Abatement Program, established in 2011, and building upon decades of work in addressing sewer capacity issues, will update infrastructure to reduce sewer overflows, reduce health risks associated with exposure to bacteria and contaminants, and improve water quality in the Cumberland River and Davidson County’s extensive network of streams, creeks and tributaries. This Program to improve the wastewater system infrastructure will provide lasting benefits for future generations, improve water quality, and provide a clean, healthier environment for our citizens.
