The Central facility, located between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, is Nashville’s largest wastewater treatment plant. In conjunction with these improvements, it’s being renamed as the Central Water Reclamation Facility to better convey that it recycles waste and returns clean water to the Cumberland.

Many of the residents of Germantown and Salemtown may be aware that Metro Water Services has initiated a massive project to upgrade the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 1600 Second Avenue North.  Typically for a project of this size Metro Water Services would host a public meeting to share information about the upcoming construction.  Since that isn’t practical at this time, we have instead created content about the project and stored it in a virtual platform. Click here to access the virtual open house.

The upgrade of the Central plant represents an investment of approximately $400 million and is the largest project within the Clean Water Nashville Program, the capital program developed to reduce sewer overflows, improve water quality for Nashville, and comply with state and federal regulations. The Virtual Open House allows you to see and hear details about the project including the architectural treatment of the new Headworks structure to be built at 3rd Avenue and Garfield.  You can learn about landscaping improvements to be added along 3rd Avenue, which will include park amenities including a dog park that will be built adjacent to the Magdeburg Greenway toward the end of the project schedule.  Details are also provided about the sustainability features of the project, and an exhibit is devoted to information about construction, including the schedule for upcoming work such as rock excavation.  Please visit the site, take the time to sign in, and opt-in for additional updates on the project.  We hope you find the material interesting and informative, and we welcome your comments and feedback at the end of the virtual tour.

As construction progresses if you have additional comments or concerns, you may call Metro Water Services at 615-862-4600 or use the Contact Us form on the Clean Water Nashville website.

In September, blasting will begin at the site to facilitate construction of the Headworks building. Because we know that may impact our neighbors, we’ve prepared frequently asked questions letting you know on what you can expect regarding the blasting.
